PAINTING AFTER PAINTING III

1 June 2023 - 8 July 2023

The exhibition Painting After Painting III reflects the gallery’s interest in contemporary developments in painting. Since the beginning of the 20th century, painting has been repeatedly declared dead by both artists and art critics. Although painting has since had to compete with photography, video, happening, conceptual art, and other forms of mechanical and digital reproduction techniques, it has by no means become a marginalized medium. On the contrary, perhaps more than ever, painting is at the center of the discourse on contemporary art.

Following the first two exhibitions Painting After Painting I and II in 2013 and 2019, the third show on this theme explores the artistic practice of four emerging painters* who also approach the medium with an awareness of both its contemporary and historical significance. Color and form, pictorial supports, and spatial boundaries are central to the work of all four artists. Starting from the physical certainty that color and form are inseparable, they have all developed an exciting oeuvre that thrives on subtle observations and opens up new perspectives for themselves and for painting.
